Hotels piling on hidden fees

Following in the footsteps of the airlines, hotels are piling on a slew of hidden fees for services that used to be free. Now guests are getting charged for everything from access to a gym (or a pool), to early check-ins or departures to holding your luggage.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Excelsior Hotel Malta

The management and staff at the Grand Hotel Excelsior are extremely honoured to have had the opportunity to host the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her successful visit to Malta on the 18th October.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior strongly believes in its commitment to promote Maltese hospitality to all its distinguished guests. Madame Secretary left a note note in the Hotel’s Visitor Guestbook saying, “Thank you for your gracious hospitality and warm welcome to Malta. All the best.”

It’s no to hotel and training school bid

A SCHEME to create a £45million hotel and training school in Bournemouth has been refused planning permission, against officers’ advice.

Hundreds of new jobs would be created if the four-star, 229-room hotel is created overlooking the Priory Road roundabout near the BIC.

However the planning board yesterday voted against the eight-storey-high scheme because they felt it was out of character with the area.

Hong Kong resurgent with double-digit RevPAR gains

LONDON—Hotel performance in Hong Kong is in a healthy state, according to data from STR Global, the leading provider of market data to the world’s hotel industry. Year-on-year growth in revenue per available room (RevPAR) for the year-to-September 2011 is well into double digits at 28 percent. The increase is largely attributable to substantial improvements in average daily rate (ADR) as well as strong growth in occupancy.

Marriott International, Inc. has been named one of the “World’s Best Multinational Workplaces” by Great Place to Work® Institute.  The ranking is the world’s largest annual study of workplace excellence and identifies the top 25 best companies to work for in the world.  Marriott ranked in the top 10, and was the only lodging company to be included on this inaugural list.  Marriott has a history of being named on “best places to work” lists in countries around the world, including India, Mexico, Peru, United Arab Emirates, and the U.S. 

David Rodriguez, Marriott’s executive vice president of Global Human Resources, attributes this not to any one program, but instead to the consistency of the company’s culture of listening and responding to the needs and concerns of its employees. “The one thing that translates in every country is Marriott’s culture of putting people first….that is part of our core value DNA.  We treat our employees the same way we expect them to treat our guests,” said Rodriguez. 

STR: US hotel results week ending 22 October 2011

HENDERSONVILLE, Tennessee—The U.S. hotel industry experienced increases in all three key performance metrics during the week of 16-22 October 2011, according to data from STR.

In year-over-year comparisons for the week, occupancy rose 4.0 percent to 66.2 percent, average daily rate increased 4.4 percent to US$105.49, and revenue per available room finished the week up 8.6 percent to US$69.88.

Among the Top 25 Markets, three reported occupancy increases of more than 15 percent: Dallas, Texas (+17.8 percent to 70.4 percent); Miami-Hialeah, Florida (+16.5 percent to 78.9 percent); and Orlando, Florida (+16.3 percent to 76.8 percent). Denver, Colorado, fell 8.2 percent in occupancy to 65.7 percent, posting the largest decrease in that metric.

Qantas has grounded its entire domestic and international fleets indefinitely

And it will lock out all its employees currently in dispute with the Australian carrier.

The lock out will begin at 8pm AEDT on Monday but the Qantas fleet -“for precautionary reasons”, the airline said - was grounded from 5pm Australian Eastern Standard time on Saturday, October 29.

UEFA EURO 2012: 28 new hotels under construction - Tophotelprojects.com reveals 28 hotel projects in Poland and Ukraine

New hotels for the UEFA Soccer Championship EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine: Tophotelprojects.com revealed that currently 28 new upscale hotels are under construction. In Poland an additional 21 first class and luxury hotels with nearly 4,000 guest rooms are being developed. The Ukraine will see 32 new upscale hotels with more than 7,400 rooms added to its hotel market.
